If there is a major age difference in a relationship, what are the chances that it will work? For some people, age is no barrier to a healthy relationship but for others, the difference may be too wide a gulf to bridge. And in some cases, relationships involving older women with younger men face even more pressure to succeed.
Personally, I know of a friend whose husband is 10 years older than her. She got married when she was barely 20 because at that time, her husband was already 30 and it was high time for him to settle down and start a family. She had her first baby at 21 and she told me it was a nightmare then as she used to feel frustrated being stuck at home with a crying baby while all her friends were out partying. Her marriage worked because her husband understood that he had married a young wife and had the patience and maturity to deal with her tantrums. Now, she is past 40, her children are all grown and she is enjoying life with her husband after all the early sacrifices.
Next, I have a cousin who married a woman 4 years older than him. On their wedding day, everyone was quietly saying that the woman looked more like an older sister than a wife to him. He was certainly well aware of the pressure and the talk because on that day he did tell my mom that age is no barrier and he loved her just the same. My mom thought he was saying it more to reassure himself that he was making the right decision more than anything else. Anyway, for my mom, a man may well marry an older woman and have no complaints on the wedding day. But her theory is 10 or 15 years down the road when the woman have had a few babies and looks much older than her man, that’s the time when trouble starts!
At the end of the day, I think if two people really love each other, they will find a way to make it work just like in any other relationships, regardless of the age differences. And no matter how old one partner may look in comparison to the other, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn’t it?
