The European Dating Blitz

Have you ever thought of just really putting yourself out there and going on as many dates as possible to find Mr. or Ms. Right? Single Gal in the City, Melissa, is doing just that. She is traveling to six countries in Europe over six weeks going on blind dates, interviewing other singles and learning about the dating culture in these countries.

First a little about Melissa, she is a native New Yorker with an introspective and insightful blog on dating, relationships and life in the Big Apple, commingled with entries from more than 90 personal diaries spanning 10+ years. It’s her 15 years as a media professional in writing, tv news reporting and public relations that enlivens her story on being single in the city.
We first met Melissa in May 2019 when she came across the SingleTease website. She loved our products and wrote a great blog about our women’s SingleTee tshirt line.

“When it comes to meeting members of the opposite sex, I’m a big believer in thinking outside the box — or, in the case of SingleTease, inside the wardrobe.”

We wrote about her blog in our press and provided Melissa with a SingleTee to test the waters in the Big Apple. She was dating someone at the time so the tee remained “inside the box”.

These days, Melissa is in Berlin, Germany on day 40 of her European Dating Blitz. She has learned that dating in Germany is not so popular, nor is getting married.  “To have sex is seen as a strength. To be not successful with dating is seen as a weakness. Men don’t see the necessity to grow up, commit and have children,” says Lorraine, a German friend.

I have a German friend living in DC who would agree. We’ve had numerous conversations about dating in Berlin. “You would never meet someone at a bar. No one talks to each other. They all have stoic faces. There’s no expected interaction.” So how do singles meet? I asked. “Through friends,” she said. I understand now why online dating is considered a last resort in Berlin!

Read more about Berlin and how dating measures up in Dublin, Paris, London, Rome and Madrid in Melissa’s daily blog entries.

I’m looking forward to reading her next entry about a romance with someone very special in Berlin. She meets him by getting out of her “comfort zone” in Berlin…hhm, sounds like she may be the one breaking the ice!

Do you have any insight on dating cultures in other countries? We would love to hear how singles meet!
